Award-winning Japanese Theater Group comes to Manila!

The Japan Foundation, Manila (JFM) and the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) bring to Manila for the first time, the highly acclaimed theater group chelfitsch this November for a two night performance.

chelfitsch is one of the most acclaimed phenomena in Japan’s theater scene in the last decade.  Toshiki Okada, who formed the group in 1997, created the hybrid name from the English words “selfish” and “childish” which adequately describes how the group sees contemporary Japanese society.  Known for super-colloquial dialogue and sloppy gestures in everyday life, the group has achieved wide acclaim in premier theater festivals and venues throughout Europe and Asia.  Their works include: On the Harmful Effects of Marijuana (Marijuana no Gai ni Tsuite); Air-Conditioner (Cooler) and The End of Toil (Rouku no Owari).

They will be performing their Kishida Kunio Drama Award- winning production, Five Days in March (Sangatsu no Itsukakan) on November 5 (Friday) and 6 (Saturday), 7:00 pm at the PETA Theater Center in Quezon City.  The play tells the story of a Japanese couple who meet at a post rock show and engage in a one night stand that lasts for five days during the time when the US was launching a series of air strikes on Iraq.

Five Days in March

The Kishida Kunio Drama Award (Kishida Kunio Gikyoku-shô) is Japan’s highest prize for drama. Named after one of the most prominent Japanese dramatist and writer of the early 20th century and one of the founders of modern Japanese drama, the award is considered as the equivalent to the USA’s Tony Awards.
